This week in social media…..

It’s been a bit of an active week in ‘social’ world, and given it excites me so much, I couldn’t resist sharing.

Who is Rob Multo?

Brilliant use of channel planning, by a simple guy from West Ryde. Or is he?

I spotted a FP ad in Beat Magazine on Wed night while waiting for a gig to start. Just a picture of this guy’s face, ‘Be My Friend’ headline, and a link to his Facebook page. Made a mental note to check it out, but after being blown away by Edward Sharpe I forgot.

Today, a Facebook ad popped up prompting me to be his friend. I checked it out, and found:

  • Campaign launched on Facebook and YouTube March 1
  • The guy’s ‘target’ was 100 friends “because his aunt Esme said it’s all about who he knows”
  • 26 days later, YouTube videos, Facebook posts, FP ads, street posters and t-shirts – he’s now at over20 times his target – 2,134 friends….

The power of emotion + use of channels + viral = campaign success. Let’s see where he goes…. And if it IS some massive company milking us, well…

CUB Campaign Pulled

I shared it with the Melbourne crew last Wednesday when it was live, and by Monday it was pulled. CUB commenting only “the campaign is finished”. TV was removed mid campaign, and online lasted 4 days. PR, however, continues, as the videos are still on YouTube.

See comment on mumbrella here: http://mumbrella.com.au/carlton-draught-ads-are-pulled-again-21110

I personally love it, think it’s great and ticks off the entertainment + viral + free publicity boxes…. Will they get $200K worth of return? Who knows.

Jetstar Dedicates 40% of Budget to Social Media

This one is self explanatory, but for media agencies slightly scary. If they do it right, many will follow. Still comes down to right offer, right channel, right audience – but it won’t be long before everyone is doing it.

Happy Friday
Jana
